- The open sea mariculture must move in our hemisphere
April 10, 2008
Considering the limitations of agriculture and the sea is "available" in an agronomic sense, humanity has an excellent alternative or complement to cultivate sea. Of course, development should occur in the largest possible balance in environmental, biodiversity, financial, fair ... What do you think?
- What is the potential of seaweed?
April 10, 2008
Seaweeds have been consumed in our hemisphere from many years ago, beginning with indigenous people. However, except for selected cases, such as cochayuyo in South America, virtually no seaweed is consumed (although now the sushi is popular). We opened this discussion to advance the knowledge and understanding of this issue.
- Design and materials for cages
March 19, 2008
We want to share ideas and experiences in design and use of cages for fish and crustaceans to sea, especially in tropical conditions (with a lot of joke or "foul") and the lowest possible cost (although it sacrifices durability).
For now postulate that we are using three materials testing and durability:
Pipe-PVC coated gelcoat (which is mostly exposed on the surface) to prevent cracking that produces ultraviolet radiation. PVC can work wonders, but not the best for sites with material flows. We will soon prove PVC pipe for irrigation, which is a little more expensive but is treated against UV radiation. PVC cage needs time to adapt well to flotation, which comes to the screen when it gets wet and accumulates joke that hits, that's when you have to finish putting flotation units, we use plastic bottles or pichingas 15 to 20 liters.
Rod-iron construction. The most inexpensive and quite durable. We must treat it well against the rust, but is achieved. The point of using this material is available on all sides, any welder does the job and is very resistant to correntes sites. One advantage of the cage of iron rod that can be used underwater, even in the background. Buoyancy is important for a small cage (say, 2 or 3 meters in diameter if round) deal about eight pichingas of 20 liters, or moored.
-Wood or bamboo. This material has little time but can be used if available, especially bamboo.
