In the Caribbean has been working for decades in the cultivation and harvesting of seaweed, which is currently in the Lesser Antilles mariculture programs exist for the production of algae that are consumed in drinks and seamoss are known as Irish moss or seaweed.

In Venezuela, Colombia, Panama and Mexico experiments in the cultivation of algae in open water for the production of ficocoloides, particularly agar and carrageenan. Kappaphycus and Eucheuma species have been introduced successfully as reliable sources of raw material for the carrageenan industry, generating jobs and using environmentally friendly.
